AQuTech group at WOPM2025!

We recently attended the Summer School and the Workshop on Optically Pumped Magnetometers (WOPM-2025), held at PSI Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland from August 6th to 8th.

We presented three posters:
"Picotesla optically pumped magnetometer using a laser-written vapor cell with sub-mm cross section" by Gianvito Lucivero, PhD
"Towards an Optical Magnetic Gradiometer Using Laser-Written Vapor Cells" presented by Yasin Taheri Mazinani.
"Towards a RF Quantum Sensor based on Rydberg atoms in microfabricated vapor cells" presented by Davide Sera.

It was an inspiring three days and a fantastic opportunity to get up-to-date on the latest results and advances from a great international community!

NQSTI 1st Congress
Prof. Lucivero gave a talk at the 1st congress of the extended partnership #NQSTI, National Institute of Quantum Sciences and Technologies.
This has been the first important opportunity both to present the scientific results obtained in the first year of the partnership and to highlight the initiatives undertaken for training aimed at high schools, dissemination and outreach on quantitative sciences and technologies, as well as programs for the transfer of quantitative technologies to the business world.

#NQSTI is the partnership financed under the #PNRR within the framework of the European Union Next generation EU. Among its objectives is to unite Italian bodies that carry out competitive and innovative research in Quantum Sciences and Technologies (QST) and to stimulate future industrial innovation in this field.

NEW WORK ON PRL
❗️ ❗️ Researchers from ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences and the University of Bari have contributed to the demonstration of #quantum enhancement of an optical magnetometer by using squeezed light ❗️ ❗️

Quantum-Enhanced Magnetometry at Optimal Number Density
Charikleia Troullinou, Vito Giovanni Lucivero, and Morgan W. Mitchell
Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 133602  (2023)

The technique has been applied in a high-density regime with an atomic number density of up to 10^13 atoms/cm^3.
This is a condition that provides optimal sensitivity of optical magnetometers for important #biomedical applications such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) or magnetocardiography (MCG) as well as in geomagnetism and space science applications.
The researchers have shown that a #quantum advantage using squeezed light is possible in this regime.

September 2023
2 contributed talks, 1 invited seminar, 2 weeks, 2 wonderful cities, meeting old and new friends, and networking with great scientists.

I had a great time participating in the conferences Quantum 2023 (Torino) and IQIS 2023 (Trieste), as well as visiting INRiM - Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica and the impressive new #PIQuET infrastructure.

Thanks to all the organizers and colleagues I met, these are exciting times for quantum science and technology in Italy (https://nqsti.it/) as well as worldwide.

"Femtotesla direct magnetic gradiometer using a multipass cell"  on  Phys. Rev.  Applied 15, 014004 (2021)
We demonstrated a direct gradiometer, with sensitivity of 10 fT/cm√Hz, using optical pumping with opposite circular polarization in two 87Rb atomic ensembles within a single multipass cell. A far-detuned probe laser undergoes a near-zero paramagnetic Faraday rotation due to the intrinsic subtraction of two contributions exceeding 3.5 rad from the highly polarized ensembles. We also demonstrate that our multipass design provides a fundamental advantage due to the significantly reduced effect of atomic diffusion on the spin-noise time-correlation, in excellent agreement with the theoretical estimate.

"Portable magnetometry  for detection of biomagnetism in ambient environments"  on Phys. Rev.  Applied 14, 011002 (2020)
PRApplied Editor's suggestion: The authors report a striking advance in measuring tiny magnetic fields under ambient conditions, using atom–light-interaction techniques enabled by cutting-edge technology.
A prototype sensor detects the magnetic fields generated by the human brain or heart, in a field-deployable system that works with great sensitivity, unshielded in Earth’s own magnetic field. This technology is scalable to arrays and can be made low-cost, which opens pathways to a wide variety of applications, such as field triage, brain-machine interfaces, and magnetic navigation.
